European norm EN50291

On 15th February 2001 Europe ratified a norm relating to domestic CO alarms.

Summary of the European norm EN 50291 relating to domestic CO alarms

Electrical appliances for the detection of Carbon monoxide in premises used for domestic purposes - Trial methods and performance requirements.

This norm stipulates that the alarm must be triggered:

Not before 120 minutes for a concentration of 30 ppm.

Between 60 and 90 minutes for a concentration of 50 ppm

Between 10 and 40 minutes for a concentration of 100 ppm.

Before three minutes for a concentration of 300 ppm.

These values ensure that European CO alarms are much safer than American CO alarms which comply with UL 2034 regulations or even British CO alarms which comply with BSI norms which were withdrawn from sales in April 2006.
